Doesn't Not Compute

My log of experiences with GNU/Linux and computers in general.

Don’t Panic! Please…please don’t panic…

Oh well, the kernel paniced. Again. “Unable to mount root fs” yadda yadda yadda.

Oh. You’re here. 😳 I’ve been trying to compile the Linux kernel for the Thinkpad, without an initrd — everything I can think of that’s needed for it to boot is compiled into the kernel (ie, not a module), yet that nagging little message keeps coming up. 🙄

I’ve nearly given up on trying to compile it with module support, but thanks to using ‘lsmod’ — which tells which modules are loaded — while running the default Arch kernel, I think I’ve tracked down the problem to a needed I2C hardware bus support driver. I’ll let the compiling run overnight, and if it works I’ll try to figure out how to post the .config file.

And then start slimming it down even more, when I have time. 🙂

In other news, the 2.6.31 kernel is out, and the 2.4 series has apparantly been updated. Hmm, if I ever figure out the uClibc buildroot (unlikely), maybe I should try mucking around with compiling the smaller, lighter 2.4 series kernel (and associated stuff). 😆 Yeah, right. 😉
